普段見ている世界がびよーんと横へ引き伸ばされ、まるでスローモーション映像をそのまま定着させたような不思議な写真。これは白井晴幸が「スリットカメラ」の原理を応用させた自作カメラで撮影した作品だ。
カメラの開口部は一本の細いスリットのみ。そこから差し込む光を受けながら、モーターによってフィルムが約120秒かけてゆっくりと巻き取られ、瞬間ではなく「時間そのもの」を織り込むように記録していく。今回完成した写真の比率はおよそ１:42。高さ10cmでプリントすると横幅は全長4.2mに達する。人や車など動く被写体は引き伸ばされ、時に消えたり、幾重にも重なったりしながら、肉眼では見えない時間の流れを浮かび上がらせる。
〈Panorama〉シリーズの新作を、白井は今回のために御代田で滞在制作した。しなの鉄道・御代田駅のホームを舞台に、通勤・通学の人々が電車を待つ、何気ない日常の数分間を撮影した。一見何も起きていないように見えるその時間にも、人は立ち位置を変え、風は吹き、光は移ろい続ける。
本来、この装置は競輪や競馬のゴール判定のような極めて限定された状況で、瞬間を正確にとらえることで威力を発揮する。しかし、レンズが日常へと向けられた途端、その精密な装置は予測不能な風景を生み出し始め、被写体は歪み、引き伸ばされ、時には姿を失う。その偶然やノイズは、私たちが見慣れた風景の中に潜む時間や見えないものを気づかせてくれる。
The familiar world appears stretched sideways, as if slow-motion had been fixed onto film. These images are made with Shirai’s self-built camera based on slit-camera principles normally used for precise adjudication in speed-based competitions.
With a single narrow slit as its aperture, the camera exposes film over roughly 120 seconds as a motor advances it, weaving not a moment but time itself into the image. The extreme aspect ratio of about 1:42 produces prints that extend meters across; moving subjects elongate, vanish, or overlap, revealing temporal flows imperceptible to the eye.
Created during Shirai’s residency in Miyota, the work records several quiet minutes on the local railway platform, where commuters wait as wind shifts, light drifts, and subtle movements accumulate.
A mechanism designed for controlled conditions becomes, when turned toward daily life, a generator of unpredictable distortions and noise—elements that disclose hidden durations and fragile presences within ordinary scenes. Such accidents and noise reveal the time and unseen elements embedded in the familiar landscape.

東京都生まれ。特異な技法やシチュエーションを創造するなど、独自のアプローチによって写真が持つ記憶の文脈を考察し、解体・再構築することで見ることの可能性を探究している。主な展示に、「Showcase Gallery 白井晴幸展」（横浜市民ギャラリーあざみ野、2022年）、「VOCA展」（上野の森美術館、2019年）、Belfast Photo Festival「Portraiture In The Post Truth Era」（Belfast Exposed、2019年）、「LUMIX MEETS BEYOND2020 BY JAPANESE PHOTOGRAPHERS #5」東京/アムステルダム/パリ（2017年）などがある。
Born in Tokyo, Shirai investigates the possibilities of seeing by examining, deconstructing, and reconstructing the photographic contexts in which memory is formed. Through original methods, he expands the conceptual field of the medium. Selected exhibitions include Showcase Gallery: Haruyuki Shirai (Yokohama Civic Art Gallery Azamino, 2022), VOCA 2019 (The Ueno Royal Museum, Tokyo), and Portraiture in the Post-Truth Era (Belfast Exposed, 2019).
