「もし近い将来、私たち人間が海底で暮らすようになったら、そこではどんなふうにアートが作られるのだろうか？」〈Water Column〉はチューリッヒ芸術大学（ZHdK）とプロ・ヘルヴェティア（スイス政府公認の芸術評議会）が主催するアーティスト・イン・ラボ・レジデンシーで生まれた作品で、芸術と科学の実践を対話させるプログラムである。タイヨ・オノラトとニコ・クレブスはアフリカ東北部とアラビア半島に挟まれた紅海の施設で研究者たちと共同作業を行った。そこで彼らは、実験室、サンゴの実験、水中機器、潜水艇、そして見慣れない海洋生物たちに出会ったという。
このプロジェクトでは、光、色彩、重力、視界といった要素が水中と陸上とではまったく違ったものになることに着目した。二人は写真が水中でどのように変化するのかを探求するために、水中カメラ、顔料、フォトグラムを用いて制作を行った。また、すでに撮影された写真の前にサンゴや貝殻、その他さまざまな物を配置して、それを再度撮影することで、砂漠や都市の景観、水中の地形をひとつのイメージの中に融合させて、作品を完成させた。
〈Water Column〉は観察と想像、科学と芸術の間を行き来しながら、一見無関係に見える環境同士を結びつけながら、変化していく地球上で芸術表現がどのように進化していくのかを問いかけている。
“What kind of art might emerge if humans were to live on the seafloor in the near future?” This question anchors Water Column, created during an ArtistinLab residency that brings artistic and scientific practice into dialogue. Working with researchers at a Red Sea facility, Onorato and Krebs entered laboratories dense with instruments, coral experiments, submersibles, and unfamiliar marine life—spaces that felt like thresholds to another world.
The project examines how light, color, gravity, and vision transform underwater, and how photographic expression shifts within those altered conditions. Using underwater cameras, pigments, and photograms, they explored the medium’s behavior below the surface. By placing corals, shells, and other objects before existing photographs and rephotographing them, they fused deserts, cities, and submarine terrains into single images.
Moving between observation and imagination, science and art, Water Column links environments that seem unrelated, asking how artistic expression might evolve—and how our ways of seeing must adapt—on a planet in flux.

共に1979年、スイス生まれのアーティスト・デュオ。社会・環境問題への関心を元に、写真を軸に彫刻、映像、出版など多様な形式で制作。ロードトリップ写真の定型を拡張しながら、先入観や神話を問い直す実験的な手法で訪れた土地を記録する。MoMA PS1、Foam写真美術館、ヴィンタートゥール写真美術館など国際的な主要機関で個展を多数開催。エディション・パトリック・フライより作品集『The Great Unreal』（2009年）、『Continental Drift』（2017年）、『Water Column』（2023年）を刊行。
Born in 1979, the Swiss artist duo works across photography, sculpture, film, and publishing, advancing the language of road-trip photography through experimental strategies that interrogate social and environmental conditions and unsettle perception and myth. They have presented solo exhibitions at MoMA PS1, Foam, and Fotomuseum Winterthur. Their publications with Edition Patrick Frey include The Great Unreal (2009), Continental Drift (2017), and Water Column (2023).
