マリア・グルズデヴァは世界の辺境と呼ばれる土地を訪れ、その場所に刻まれた記憶や人々の営み、風景とアイデンティティの関係を丹念に見つめてきた。この作品の舞台は、ロシア最北部、北極圏のさらに奥に広がる「Luorawetlan（ルオラウェトラン）」。北東シベリアに暮らす先住民族チュクチの言葉で「真の人間」を意味するこの地は、豊かな天然資源を有しながらもいまなお神秘に包まれた、地球上で最も到達が困難な場所のひとつと言われる。
ここでは、一日中太陽が沈まない極昼、一日中薄明が続く極夜、オーロラやハロ（光輪）といった自然現象が、古くから語り継がれる神話や信仰と溶け合いながら存在している。グルズデヴァはその壮大な風景だけではなく、そこに生きる人々や動物、日々の暮らしへと静かに眼差しを向ける。写真に写るのは人間が自然を支配する世界ではなく、自然の時間の中に人間が身を置いて生きる世界だ。
私たちは「極北」と聞くと、氷に閉ざされた荒涼とした世界を想像する。しかし北極圏という境界線は地図の上には描かれていても、実際にはどこにも見えない。そして、この作品に広がるのは自然と文明が矛盾なく共存する豊かな風景だ。写真は、遠い土地を私たちのもとへ運んでくるだけではない。イメージの向こうに息づく固有の時間や記憶に触れる時、私たちの世界の見え方は揺さぶられ、「辺境」とは誰の視点によって生み出された言葉なのかを浮かび上がらせる。
Maria Gruzdeva travels to what are often called the world’s remote edges, tracing memories held in land, the lives shaped by it, and the shifting ties between landscape and identity. This work unfolds in Luorawetlan, deep within Russia’s Far North, beyond the Arctic Circle—a region named for the Chukchi word for “true man,” long inaccessible, resourcerich, and still veiled in mystery.
Here, Polar Day and Night, the Northern Lights, halos, and other Arctic phenomena mingle with ancestral mythologies and enduring beliefs. Gruzdeva’s gaze turns to the monumental terrain as well as to the people, animals, and quiet rhythms of daily life, revealing a world where humans live within nature’s vast temporal order.
Though the Arctic Circle appears on maps, it has no visible threshold; the landscapes she offers show nature and human presence in unforced coexistence. Photography not only carries distant places toward us—it lets us sense the time and memory breathing beyond the image, prompting us to reconsider whose perspective first defined “remoteness.”

ロシア生まれ。長期的なドキュメンタリー・プロジェクトを中心に活動する写真家、リサーチャー、マルチメディア・アーティスト。集合的記憶や土地への帰属意識、風景とアイデンティティの関係をテーマに制作を続けている。作品は森美術館、フィンランド写真美術館、トレチャコフ美術館などで展示され、2016年には『Forbes』誌「30 Under 30」（アート部門）に選出。これまでに3冊の写真集を刊行し、作品はウェールズ国立博物館やトレチャコフ美術館などに収蔵されている。また、自身の研究分野に関する講演やディスカッションにも積極的に参加している。
Born in Russia, Gruzdeva is a photographer, researcher, and multimedia artist whose practice centers on long-term documentary investigations. Her work examines collective memory, belonging, and the entangled relationship between landscape and identity. She has exhibited at the Mori Art Museum, the Finnish Museum of Photography, and the Tretyakov Gallery, and was included in Forbes 30 Under 30 (Art) in 2016. Her works are held in the collections of National Museum Wales and the Tretyakov Gallery.
