Most likely the flames will destroy themselves / Looking Up

The human figure emerges faintly—exposed, obscured, and fragmented—its expression unreadable, its gestures suspended in ambiguity. Veils of color evoke shifting emotional states, from exhilaration to dread. Between these figures appear close studies of fireworks at the instant their brilliant explosions dissolve into vapor. Enlarged from Polaroids, the image reveals the film’s grain and the subtle noise of its chemical reaction.
This body of work began with a visit to Ōkunoshima, the island where Japan secretly manufactured chemical weapons during World War II, leading Axelvall to the life of Fritz Haber. Celebrated for the synthesis of ammonia, which transformed modern agriculture, Haber’s research later became inseparable from the history of chemical warfare and the Holocaust.
The blurred figures and lingering vapors become metaphors for the coexistence of violence and beauty, chaos and order, memory and forgetting. The wild rabbits—once test animals, now feral—stand as quiet reminders that history is never erased but transformed, leaving traces that continue to shape the present.
