2016年、パット・マーティンとその弟が見つけたのは、貸し倉庫の中で忘れられていた家族のアルバム。長年の放置でカビや傷みが激しく、写真はほとんど失われ、わずかに残されていたのは、途切れてしまったごくありふれた家族の日々の断片だった。幼い頃に父親は家を去り、長く薬物依存症を患うシングルマザーのもとで育ったマーティンの家庭は崩壊していたため、もともと「家族の思い出」と呼べるものはほとんど存在していなかったが、失われたアルバムの発見は、改めてその空白を突きつける出来事でもあったという。
それ以来、体調が悪化していく母や離れ離れになっていた家族を撮影することは、彼にとって失われた関係を結び直すための切実な行為となった。母親、兄、その子どもたち、祖父母──傷を抱えながらも少しずつ再生していく家族の関係を丁寧に記録し、「新しい家族のアルバムを自らの手でつくることは、セラピーのようなものだった」とマーティンは言う。
「過去の記憶を保存するもの」としてではなく、「現在の記憶を編み直すもの」としての写真。ロサンゼルスの柔らかな光の中で撮られた親密で信頼に満ちた写真群は、理想化された家族像ではない。対立や痛み、赦し、そして壊れやすくも確かに存在する愛をそのままひとつの家族の姿として受け止めた証だ。時間とともに記憶が薄れ、写真そのものが傷つき、姿を変えたとしても、そこに写された人々と分かち合った時間だけは静かに残り続ける。
In 2016, Martin and his brother uncovered a forgotten storage unit containing their family’s deteriorating photo albums—images nearly erased by mold, leaving only fragile traces of a life that had fractured long before. Raised by a single mother whose struggle with addiction left him emotionally orphaned, he had few intact memories to inherit; the damaged albums only made the absence more visible.
Photographing his mother as her health declined, and the family that remained, became an urgent act of presence and care—a way to rebuild connection where distance had prevailed. Through portraits grounded in stillness, intimacy, and trust, he began to form a new family album, one that reconstructs memory through the act of looking rather than preserving a past that no longer existed whole.
Rather than idealizing what was broken, the work embraces confrontation, forgiveness, and the fragile resilience of love. It acknowledges the emotional weight of family histories and the passage of time. Even as memory shifts or recedes, what endures is the shared presence held within the portrait.

1992年生まれ、アメリカ・カリフォルニア州ロサンゼルスを拠点に活動する写真家。ポートレイトを中心に制作し、家族や身近な人々との関係を通して、記憶や喪失、人と人とのつながりをテーマに作品を発表している。被写体との親密な協働を通して、ドキュメンタリーと個人的な物語の境界を行き来する作品を制作。自身が経験した家庭環境や家族との関係を出発点としながら、写真を「過去を記録するもの」だけでなく、「新しい記憶や関係を育むもの」としてとらえている。2019年、亡き母を撮影した作品により、英国ナショナル・ポートレイト・ギャラリー主催のテイラー・ウェシング写真ポートレイト賞を受賞。
Born in 1992, Martin is a Los Angeles–based photographer whose portraiture examines memory, loss, and the emotional weight of family histories. Informed by his own experience of instability, he approaches the camera as a means of shaping presence and connection rather than simply preserving the past. His work traces how relationships endure through acts of looking, care, and resilience. In 2019, he received the Taylor Wessing Photographic Portrait Prize for portraits of his late mother.
