Ruth van Beek
Lazybones nr. 21

Photographs of handmade objects, plants, animals, and textiles unfold like the pages of a book. They seem connected, yet their relationships hover in ambiguity.
Van Beek explores how photographs can be arranged and related to one another. Gathering images from old books and magazines, she cuts and recombines them into new configurations. This work is an enlarged version of Lazybones, an accordion book, presented as an installation. Each photograph slips into small cuts in the paper—a method once used in traditional albums—so the images become objects that can be touched, moved, and rearranged.
The title—literally “the idle one” or “the sluggard”—refers to pictures that long rested in the artist’s archive. Once used to inform or illustrate, they are lifted from their original contexts and placed in unexpected combinations, where new meanings begin to emerge.
Like drawing constellations in the night sky, van Beek links images to reveal quiet affinities, each viewer’s memories shaping different associations. These modest photographs ask us to look again—and to rediscover what seeing can be.
Profile
Ruth van Beek
作品はPOST(東京)、Foam(アムステルダム)、Fraenkel Gallery(サンフランシスコ)、アルル国際写真祭などで発表。
Born in the Netherlands in 1977, van Beek examines the shifting relationship between photographs and objects, treating photographs as objects in their own right. Guided by the idea that things possess agency, she approaches ordinary materials with an almost childlike attentiveness. Her practice spans collage, archival image arrangements, artist’s books, and handmade objects. Her work has been exhibited internationally, and she has taught at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam since 2014.
